Io dico Io – I say I Curated by Cecilia Canziani, Lara Conte and Paola Ugolini 03.01.2021 –– 05.23.2021
The exhibition Out of focus, curated by Anna Gorchakovskaya and Francesca Palmieri, presents to the public for the first time a selection of volumes from the photobooks archive, consisting of more than 7.000 books, acquired by the Galleria Nazionale in 2018.
The selection presented on this occasion addresses three topics interconnected with the idea of a woman as a subject: fragmentary visions, different ways of occupying the space and alternative alphabets.
Photographic images, once put in communication, form unprecedented intersections, creating space for the unexpected, for what is normally out of the picture, for the spaces in-between. The books, in conversation with each other and with the works from the collection, introduce a transversal exploration of images and the archive becomes a place for new stories and imagery.
The idea of Out of focus is to bring into focus everything that tends to slip away, that normally stays on the background or at the margin, which bell hooks defines as “a site of radical possibility, a space of resistance”.
