The phrase “Conversation Piece”, in the context of art history, generally refers to a style of painting native of the Netherlands, and became extremely popular in England in the 17th and 18th centuries. “Conversation piece” refers to paintings that depict groups of people while talking to each other or interacting with their families. These scenes can be distinguished from official portraits, in which the subject was shown posing, because of their informal context and because of the relaxed relationships established among the characters.
After an introduction on the genre of Conversation Pieces, starting with Juan Munoz’s work that the exhibition is named after, visitors will have the chance to embark on a treasure hunt looking for similar works within the collection of the museum.
